Polo Pony Training
Polo Stallion
Adalberto & Diego Barberini grew up on large ranch in Argentina, having spent the last 20 years specifically around the polo industry.
There are three major exports from Argentina, beef, and red wine and would you believe polo ponies!
Whilst Polo is very much a national sport, it is a real family sport too, children will learn to ride at a very early age and stick and ball for fun after school. The skill and horsemanship required hurtling around at 30 mph, whilst hitting a cricket-sized ball is as you would imagine, phenomenal.
The Argentine horses still run in herds, both on the Pampas & on ranches and are bred on a massive scale. At 3 years old, these young horses are divided into various groups, determined by their shape, size and breeding. Some go onto to make cattle horses, whilst the finer built horses are trained to become polo ponies.
Nearly all the horses however are trained in the first instance as a cattle horse; this develops manoeuvrability, speed and agility, all of which are major attributes of the polo pony.
Aldaberto subsequently went onto to produce some of the top competition ponies in the world, flying from country to country, having worked for some of the biggest names in polo.
Aldaberto finally hung up his competition boots in 1997,having worked for the high goal team, Black Bears for the previous six years.
His International record speaks for itself, winning the prestigious Gold Cup in England, The Swiss Open, and The Silver Cup in France and before that when working for Jeffrey Cain in America, the Rolex Cup and the Bocaraton Cup in Florida. Finally, in. Australia for Kerry Packer, the Ellerston Cup, together with the most prestigious the Open in Argentina, undoubtedly the best polo in the world.

Polo is undoubtably, one of the richest sports there is, with both ponies and trainers being well sought after, money can become no object, and with horses making thousands of dollars. Some of the most famous horses have been linked to Argentina, one Argentine pony 2 years ago changed hands for one season only, for a million dollars!
However polo can be enjoyed on a much smaller scale, there are a number of low and medium goal teams and clubs dotted up and down the country, with an ever increasing amount of polo ponies needing expert help or training. Ponies will often winter with us and then have pre training before the season, or full training for younger horses.
The excellent facilities and grassland make the YEC an ideal base for polo, along with Adalberto and Diegos professional eye.
