ONE STEP AT A TIME PLEASE
Once a young horse has accepted the tack and rider, which undoubtedly is the most un-natural thing, they are ridden on for a week or two in the round pen with the security of another mounted horse. By using a bitless American bosal or an Argentine headcollar, the horse is encouraged to go forward and develop natural balance. Owners are invited to come and watch their horse and even mount at this stage. Usually by the end of the first week the horse is mounted and quite happy with his tack.
Over the next few weeks the horse moves out of the round pen and is encouraged to walk, trot and canter in the arena. If he is happy and relaxed at this stage, he will then progress to hacking out on the ranch. If the horse has not progressed sufficiently he is allowed to develop until he is ready to move on!
